Wichita fire and police rescue teams recovered a body from the Little Arkansas River on Sunday afternoon along the 500 block of Nims.

Police were called to the scene shortly after 4:30 p.m. when a jogger noticed what appeared to be a body floating in the river.

“We came out and confirmed that it was,” said Sgt. John Hoofer, spokesman for the Wichita Police Department.

On Thursday night, a 38-year-old man was swept away by the river’s current when he jumped into the river after fleeing police. He was reported to have run north toward some apartment complexes along the Little Arkansas River. Police continued searching for the man on Friday.

On Sunday, Hoofer said it was too soon to know for sure whether the body recovered was that of the missing man.

“We don’t know for sure who it is,” Hoofer said. “It could be, but we are trying to get confirmation as to who it is and make proper notifications.”

Hoofer did say the body was that of a man and that it appeared to have been in the river for some time.

“It doesn’t appear to have been an excessively long time, but he had been in there for a little while,” Hoofer said.

The clothed body was found covered in mud.

It took more than an hour for fire and police crews to remove the body. Residents of nearby apartments gathered and watched the process as several officers held sheets around the body.
