A barbecue at a house on North Woodland abruptly ended Tuesday night when an accidental shooting sent a 28-year-old man to the hospital in the serious condition, Wichita police said Wednesday.

Someone attending the barbecue in the 1500 block of North Woodland, just north of 13th and west of Waco, was showing a handgun shortly before 10:30 p.m., Lt. Doug Nolte said. A 27-year-old man, who was the victim’s roommate, fired the weapon, striking the 28-year-old in the upper body, Nolte said.

The man’s injuries are not life threatening, Nolte said.

After an investigation and talking to witnesses, Nolte said police determined the shooting was accidental.
