Bob Dole’s advice for the GOP: Put up sign saying 'closed for repairs'

Bob Dole has been out of the Senate since 1996, but he’s never out of the news for long.

On Sunday, the almost 90 year old showed up on “Fox News Sunday” to offer a little unsolicited advice to his party.

“I think they ought to put a sign on the National Committee doors that says closed for repairs until New Year’s Day next year and spend that time going over ideas and positive agenda,” he said.

The GOP has changed so much in recent years that even some of the party’s best-known recent leaders couldn’t have been elected today, he said.

“Reagan couldn't have made it. Certainly, Nixon couldn't have made it, because he had ideas,” Dole said. “We might've made it, but I doubt it.”

Former Maine Sen. Olympia Snowe, a fellow Republican, said Tuesday she agreed with Dole. She called Dole a “consensus builder” who “understood what was essential and important for the Republican Party and what was important for America,” she said on MSNBC.

“And that unfortunately has been lost today on Capitol Hill.”
