Galaxy Technologies planning to expand Winfield facility

Galaxy Technologies in Winfield plans to add new equipment and a 50,000-square-foot addition to its manufacturing facility.

The additional space will accommodate a new milling center and allow Galaxy to expand its fabrication capabilities, company officials said.

The company expects the new milling center to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2014.

The expansion will support the increasing requirements of Galaxy’s aerospace and plastics customers, the company said.

Galaxy has placed an order for a high-speed, high-acceleration vertical milling machine, which will be one of the largest vertical milling machines in the U.S. dedicated exclusively to the manufacturing of complicated, high-tolerance aerospace and plastics tooling, the company said. The machine measures 60 by 20 feet.

Last month, Galaxy president and CEO Andy Plyler said the company plans to add 40 employees this year to its staff of 200, which is up from 105 in 2010.

The job openings include machinists, computer numerical control operators and plastic mold builders.

All sectors of Galaxy’s business are expanding, especially the commercial aerospace market, he said.

Its biggest customers are Boeing, Spirit AeroSystems, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Rubbermaid and Coleman.

The company started in 1985 building molds for what is now Rubbermaid.

Gladstone Investment Corp., a publicly traded business development company, bought the business in 2008.
