TIPS FOR WEARING SUMMER TRENDS

Adjust the trends to fit your wardrobe and personality.

If you feel self-conscious in bright colors, add just a touch, whether it’s the trim on a dress, an accessory such as your handbag or a set of bangle bracelets.

Stripes can be bold. Remember, narrow stripes count as part of the trend. Maybe just a striped blouse or shirt under your jacket is the ticket. Remember to beware of tight, stretchy fabrics with stripes if you don’t want to accent your curves. Stripes are flattering in a fit-and-flare silhouette.

Fabrics are in full bloom, but the trend doesn’t call for only giant floral prints. The famous Liberty of London floral prints (and similar prints) are demure and look great on everyone.

When shopping for a tunic, choose a versatile style that you can wear many different ways with a variety of pieces already in your closet. Some can be worn as a dress, and just for fun, try it belted.

Mother Nature took her own sweet time bringing us honest-to-goodness spring weather, but now that we’re amid the blooms, it’s time to turn our attention to summer.

One word to remember for the hot season: color! Choose rich, saturated brights that go with basic black and perennial white but are the most fun when they’re combined for a real splash of color.

Orange, reds, magenta, bright coral, turquoise, yellow and lime green are a few of the favorites, so mix them up.

Another strong trend: stripes. Lines aren’t just for nautical looks this year. Stripes are going in more ways than the expected vertical and horizontal. Colorful stripes of varying widths go in all directions and sometimes a variety in one garment.

Blooms show up not only in floral prints, but in jewelry, and from head to toe on shoes, handbags, hats and hair accessories.

For those who love the strong contrast of black and white, never fear: The popular combination is back, especially in a wide range of graphic prints. Pull out those favorite black and white pieces and remember the combo is easily updated with a jolt of bright color.

Dresses with hems from mid-thigh to ankle length are here to make getting ready easy.

It seems there is a myriad of silhouettes to choose from. Making a showing is the pleated dress with plenty of twirl, but the maxi dress, so popular last year, is back for day and night.

Other hot items: sheer or silky tunics over skinny ankle pants, lace blouses and dresses, and metallic pieces to wear almost anytime and anywhere you’re going.

Yes, it’s going to get hot, but play it cool with white, brights, stripes, floral and a tall, frosty glass of lemonade.
