The Independent School, a private school in east Wichita, has raised more than $2 million toward its capital campaign and soon will begin building a new multi-sport complex, officials announced Thursday.

The complex, which will include an artificial turf football and soccer field and an eight-lane track, is scheduled to be completed by fall, said Dana Daniels, the school’s director of development.

It will be dedicated to the founders of the school, the late Willard and Jean Garvey.

Earlier this year the school, 8317 E. Douglas, launched a multi-year, $6.5 million fundraising campaign. Besides the athletic complex, improvements planned for the first phase include a media center, classroom upgrades, additional space for drama programs and an LED sign at the campus entrance.

Future phases of the improvement plan call for a new multi-purpose building, a practice gym for the Lower School and a performing arts center, Daniels said.

Independent was founded in 1980. It currently enrolls about 510 children in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.
