Wichita police are seeking public assistance in identifying the people who set off a chemical bomb at an apartment complex Sunday afternoon.

The explosive device was detonated at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday in the stairwell of the apartment complex at 1030 N. Market, Lt. Doug Nolte said. Because the external stairwell was made of concrete and metal, no damage occurred.

A second chemical bomb did not detonate, Nolte said. The bomb squad rendered the second device safe, he said.

“These are very common devices that kids make,” Nolte said.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.

Nolte called the devices “highly dangerous” and capable of hurting or maiming anyone close to it when it explodes.
