Derby Days won’t be held this June

Derby Days, an annual community celebration in Derby for 35 years, has been postponed this summer while organizers try to rally support for the event.

According to a statement on the Derby Days web site, the festival has suffered since moving its dates to Father’s Day weekend to avoid conflicting with the Wichita River Festival, which moved its dates several years ago.

Derby Days, which is organized and coordinated by a six-member board, has had more difficulty obtaining donations and volunteers, the statement said.

“Community involvement has dwindled, and changes in the economy have resulted in an increased cost of running the festival,” the statement said.

With the exception of a carnival put on by Ottaway Amusements, donations and money from the sales of buttons fund the festival.

“We hope to rally the support of the community, local government, local businesses and churches, to revive and support this festival,” the statement said.
