Farmers markets opening

The Old Town Farmers Market opens for the season Saturday, from 7 a.m. to noon at 150 N. Mosley, and the Old Town weeknight market at Normandie Center is open now, too. Its hours are 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays at 6547 E. Central.

The Lincoln Heights Village farmers market in College Hill will open Wednesday. It will be at Douglas and Oliver from 7 to 11 a.m.

Designer Q&A

Q: I used semi-gloss paint on the trim in my house, because that’s what everyone says to use on trim. But it’s so shiny! I don’t like it. Should I try another brand, or another finish, like satin?

A: Nicole Curtis, host of HGTV/DIY Network’s “Rehab Addict,” answers: Semi-gloss is like me wearing Spandex — not flattering to anything past 16 years old. Use satin or eggshell.

Rose Expo at Botanica

The Wichita Rose Society will have a Rose Expo on Mother’s Day, May 12, at Botanica, when moms will get in free to the gardens and everyone else pays $5. Hours will be 1 to 5 p.m. The society’s rosarians will share their favorite varieties, provide educational information and answer rose-gardening questions. The expo will include a non-juried rose show in which members of the public can display their roses. Entries will be accepted from 9 to 11 a.m. Vases will be provided.

And K-State entomologist Raymond Cloyd will be at the rose society’s next meeting, May 14, at Botanica to talk about understanding systemic pesticides. Light refreshments and a meet-and-greet will be at 6:30 p.m., followed at 7 by the meeting and presentation. Admission to the meeting is free and open to the public.
