Wichita North High School locked down briefly Friday afternoon as police investigated possible gunfire heard in a nearby neighborhood.

The school contacted 911 to report the lockdown following multiple reports of shots fired at 14th and Waco at 2:11 p.m., authorities said. Police searched the neighborhood but found nothing, Wichita police Sgt. Ron Hunt said, and cleared the scene quickly.

Wichita school district spokeswoman Susan Arensman said the school, 1437 N. Rochester, was secured “for a short time.” The lockdown was lifted around 2:30 p.m., she said.

Hunt said officers “stayed around the school until about 3:30 p.m. or so” until most students had departed for the day.
