A man was arrested early Wednesday evening after he tried to steal tip money from tables at a diner and then threatened an employee with a butter knife, police said.

The incident unfolded shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday at Brints Diner near Lincoln and Oliver in southeast Wichita, Lt. Joe Schroeder said.

Witnesses spotted the 20-year-old man trying to take the tip money left behind on tables. When he was confronted, he grabbed a butter knife and threatened an employee with it, Schroeder said.

A group of customers pushed him out the door and held the door closed to keep him from coming back inside. Police were notified and officers found him near the diner.

The man claimed he was “just playing around” with the employees, Schroeder said. But he was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of aggravated assault for threatening the employee with the knife.
