A 38-year-old man who barricaded himself in a south Wichita house Wednesday morning after he set the house on fire has been taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, a dispatcher said.

Police entered the house in the 2000 block of South Gold about 11 a.m. and took the man into custody. He was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis.

Shortly before 10:30 a.m., authorities were alerted that a “suicidal” man had set the house on fire, the dispatcher said. When firefighters arrived, they found light smoke coming from the house, which is east of McLean Blvd. and south of Mount Vernon.

The fire was extinguished shortly after the man was taken out of the house, the dispatcher said.
