The Kansas Medical Society will host its 154th annual meeting on May 3 and 4 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Wichita.

Jerry Slaughter, Kansas Medical Society executive director, said that the big topic at this year’s meeting will be reorganization of the group.

“It’s been almost 100 years, literally, since we’ve taken a look at the organization’s structure,” Slaughter said.

“With the changes in health care and realignment among key players, the board felt it was time to take a good look at the structure and change it in a way that will continue to be representative of all the doctors in the state and continue to represent and advocate for them in a way that’s relevant.”

Meetings rotate on an annual basis among Wichita, Topeka and the Kansas City area, Slaughter said.

The roughly 4,600-member society has a House of Delegates that will vote on several resolutions and reaffirm policies at the meeting.

Jon Rosell, Medical Society of Sedgwick County executive director, said he anticipates that members will propose several resolutions, including a resolution for supporting a system called Transportable Physician Orders for Patient Preference, in which a patient outlines their wishes for end of life care. Other resolutions are expected to deal with the truth in health care advertising, stressing the importance of physician-led care teams, and leadership in emergency medical services. For more information, go to www.kmsonline.org.
