When Doug Neff joined Commerce Bank’s Wichita region as its commercial banking leader, he was 34.

Now Neff is moving up to be the next chairman and CEO of the bank’s Springfield, Mo., market.

And Neff’s replacement in the local commercial banking leadership seat is 35-year-old Collin Stieben.

“From our perspective, it’s rewarding to have built a bench of bankers” moving up in the bank and beyond Wichita, said John Clevenger, chairman and CEO of the Commerce region that includes Wichita, Derby, El Dorado and Hutchinson. “This kind of situation is a win-win for everybody.”

The bank announced the promotions Tuesday.

Neff, 44, will begin transitioning to the Springfield post later this week, while Stieben began his duties today as business banking manager of the Wichita region.

Stieben, who started his Commerce career in Wichita 10 years ago as a credit analyst, will oversee a staff of 18 employees and will still maintain a portfolio of commercial banking clients, albeit a smaller one.

“We all keep some (customer) relationships,” Clevenger said of the bank’s top local leaders, including himself.

“Having us all be engaged with clients at an intimate level, we think it’s a best practice.”

Stieben grew up in Clearwater and attended Wichita State University on a Barton scholarship, which is the university’s largest business scholarship. He briefly worked with the Williams company in Tulsa before returning to the area to work as a banker. “I grew up with a father who was in banking all his life, and I looked up to him,” Stieben said.

Neff said the Springfield post is a “nice opportunity for me.”

But “this is really a bittersweet move,” Neff added.

“We’re all very happy for Doug,” Clevenger said. “He’s deserving of this opportunity. By the same token, we get to promote from within … giving (Stieben) a chance to take on a leadership role here.”

Based in Kansas City, Mo., Commerce has more than $22 billion in assets, and ranks fifth in Wichita area market share.
