For Pat Do, orthopedic surgeon and founding partner of Mid-America Orthopedics, patients come first.
“I don’t care about the numbers,” he said. “The finances will take care of themselves as long as we’re taking care of people.”
Do founded the practice in 2000 right after finishing his medical training. He was 29 years old and had to take out a “big loan.” He said he’s still loyal to those bankers who put their trust in him and his idea.
“He’s done quite well in his first job,” said Matt Quinn, chief operating officer. “He’s worked hard as a business owner and physician and is a self-starter.”
Mid-America Orthopedics’ first location was in El Dorado. The practice expanded to its east Wichita location in 2004, added a west location in 2008, and expanded to its Derby location in 2010.
“As an orthopedic resident, I heard that patients were waiting weeks to get an appointment and then hours in the lobby,” Do said. “I thought we could produce a better system.”
Do said Mid-America has a commitment to seeing any new patient within one week – regardless of the payer – with a focus on physicians seeing patients and not being bogged down with administrative paperwork
Mid-America Orthopedics offers services such as X-ray, MRI, physical therapy and durable medical equipment in the offices for patient convenience and accessibility, Do said.
Do said they are considering opening franchises in Kansas City, Topeka and Hutchinson, but there is a caveat:
“We have to make sure that we maintain the quality and expectations,” he said. “We don’t want to be overextended.”
In 2012, the four locations had more than 62,000 patient encounters, which has led to a growth in the number of staff.
Mid-America Orthopedics currently has 103 employees. There are seven physicians, seven midlevel providers and 17 physical therapists and assistants.
