Authorities are seeking the public’s help in solving the burglary of numerous rare coins.

Someone broke into a house early Monday afternoon just west of Derby and stole coins worth nearly $42,000, Sheriff’s Lt. Dave Mattingly said. The break-in occurred between 12:15 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the 4400 block of East 83rd Street South.

Among the items taken were antique coins valued at $40,000 and a bag of pennies worth an estimated $1,200.

“That’s an awful lot of pennies,” Mattingly said.

Also taken were an antique shotgun and five briefcases, Mattingly said. The antique coins were stored in the briefcases.

“They’re not just a couple of silver dollars,” Mattingly said. “They’re something special.”
