An additional $658,000 was approved Wednesday by the Sedgwick County Commission so work on improving 53rd Street North could begin.

The road will be expanded to three lanes between Webb and Greenwich roads. Construction will begin in May and is expected to be completed by the end of the year, said David Spears, the county’s public works director.

The county already had approved $1.4 million for the project, but costs have increased since that amount was first set in 2009, Spears said.
