On April 27, people will have a chance to clear out old and unused prescription drugs from their medicine cabinets and safely dispose of them at sites staffed by law enforcement agencies.

The aim of the annual national Drug Take Back Day is to prevent drugs from falling into the wrong hands.

“Prescription drug abuse continues to be our nation’s fastest growing drug problem,” Barry Grissom, U.S. Attorney in the district of Kansas, said in a prepared statement. “Prescription painkillers cause more overdose deaths each year than heroin and cocaine combined.”

As many as 16 million Americans age 12 or older have abused prescription medications such as pain relievers, tranquilizers, sedatives and stimulants, he said.

In Sedgwick County, people will be able to turn their prescription drugs in from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the following locations:

• Oaklawn Activity Center, 4900 South Clifton

• Household Hazardous Waste, 801 W. Stillwell

• Sedgwick County Zoo, 5500 W. Zoo Blvd.

• City of Bel Aire Community Room, North Entrance, 7651 E Central Park Ave., Bel Aire

• Maize City Hall, 10100 W. Grady Ave, Maize

• Rose Hill City Hall, 125 W. Rosewood, Rose Hill

• Haysville Police Department, 200 West Grand, Haysville

Other locations in the region are the Harvey County Sheriff’s Department, 120 E. 7th, Newton, and the Wal-Mart at K-254 and Village Road in El Dorado.
