Shockers sweep Bradley, take lead in MVC

Career highs by Erik Harbutz and Micah Green helped Wichita State defeat host Bradley 18-8 and take over the Missouri Valley Conference lead.

The game was halted after eight innings by the league 10-run rule as the Shockers swept the three-game series.

The Shockers’ 18 runs and 18 hits are both single-game highs this season.

WSU’s victory, coupled with Missouri State’s 8-5 loss to Southern Illinois, moved the Shockers into the Valley lead at 7-2. Missouri State fell to 6-3.Indiana State swept Creighton to improve to 7-5 and Creighton fell to 5-4.

Harbutz drove in a career-high six runs with three doubles. Green’s four hits was a single-game career high. Green drove in four runs.

Despite scoring nine runs in the first three innings, WSU led 9-7 after four innings. Aaron LaBrie came on in the fifth and held Bradley to one run and four hits the rest of the way, earning his third save.

Foster Vielock (2-0) earned the victory, going 2 2/3 innings and allowing one run on two hits.

The Shockers sent eight batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring four runs on five hits. They sent nine to the plate in the second, getting three runs on five hits. Again in the third, they sent nine to the plate, scoring two runs on one hit. In the fifth, WSU sent 10 to the plate and scored five on five hits. In the eighth, the Shockers sent eight to the plate and scored four runs on just two hits.

The first six batters in the Shocker batting order had a multi-hit game. Cody Bobbit had three hits, Garrett Baylitt had two, Tyler Baker had two, Casey Gillaspie had three and Green (4) and Harbutz (3).

Harbutz just missed a grand slam in the fifth. With the bases loaded, he hit a drive to right that hit the top of the wall.

Notes: Bradley coach Elvis Dominguez has now lost all 13 of his games against WSU. . . . Bradley has lost 16 straight to WSU, 24 of its last 25 and has dropped 11 straight series to the Shockers. Overall, WSU leads 93-24.. . . WSU batters had some good numbers in the series. Green went 8 for 14 (.571 and scored seven runs). Baker went 6 for 12 (.500). Gillaspie went 5-11 (.455). Harbutz went 5 for 15 (.333) and had four doubles. Bobbit went 5 for 12 (.417). . . . Shocker batters struck out 10 times Sunday, giving them 34 in the three games. . . Kris Gardner (1-4, 4.80) will pitch for WSU on Tuesday against Kansas State.
