Wild turkey

Kansas’ 40th spring turkey season is under way, and chances of success are high.

Last year an estimated 42,000 hunters killed at least one turkey, for a success rate of more than 60 percent.

That’s probably the highest in the nation, again.

Since it’s legal to shoot two birds in most of Kansas, the total kill was about 32,000.

Just how good is the Kansas turkey hunting?

It’s good enough that hunters usually come from most other states.

Last spring, about 40 percent of the hunters in the Kansas spring woods were non-residents.
