The 10th and 15th street bridges that go under I-135 will be closed for three weeks starting Monday so city officials can determine whether the structures can be converted to pedestrian bridges.

City engineers will study the effect of closing the 10th and 15th street bridges on the traffic in neighboring areas. The purpose is to test whether the structures can be switched to less costly pedestrian bridges.

Current daily traffic on the two bridges is only 350 vehicles on 10th street and 225 vehicles on 15th street, according to the city.

During the closures, traffic may cross the canal at four other bridges — Ninth, 11th, 13th and 17th streets — that are located within a half mile.

The conversion plan has been presented at two public meetings earlier this month. Public comment also will be solicited during the District 1 advisory board meeting at 6:30 p.m. on May 6 at the Atwater Neighborhood City Hall, 2755 E. 19th St.
