Authorities have identified an Andover man killed Wednesday morning near 47th Street South and Rock Road as 81-year-old James Barkley.

Sedgwick County sheriff’s Lt. David Mattingly said Barkley was driving a Honda CRV north on Rock when he pulled onto the shoulder to initiate a U-turn. As he turned, a 35-year-old Derby man also driving northbound broadsided the SUV.

Barkley was taken in critical condition to Wesley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Barkley’s passenger, a 78-year-old Derby woman, suffered minor injuries, Mattingly said.

The accident was reported at 7:53 a.m. Wednesday.
