Wichita State basketball coach Gregg Marshall confirmed media reports this morning that UCLA had contacted his representative last week, wanting to talk to Marshall about its then-vacant coaching job.

“I’m coaching a team in the Final Four,” Marshall said on “Sports Daily,” a KFH radio show co-hosted by The Eagle’s Bob Lutz. “We are still playing. There were overtures made to a representative of mine from UCLA and they wanted to talk. And I totally refused to do that while in L.A., while we were still playing. And I would never do that.”

UCLA hired Steve Alford on Saturday, the day Wichita State beat Ohio State in the West Regional final at Staples Center.

Marshall called to talk about his Tuesday radio interview on “The Dan Patrick Show,” where Patrick played a clip from a national college basketball writer that said Marshall was not well-liked in the coaching industry, then asked Marshall about it.

“Not one time did he ask me about my basketball team going to the Final Four in the entire interview,” Marshall said Wednesday. “He did mention that we were Cinderella, which I refuted, but that was the extent talking about our team in the Final Four.”

Marshall said Patrick called him later Tuesday to apologize, and Wednesday Patrick apologized on his show.

Marshall said he scheduled to appear on “The Doug Gottlieb Show” on Wednesday. Tuesday’s appearance was canceled not because of the Patrick interview, as Gottlieb’s producer said on the air, but because of a misunderstanding between the athletic media relations office and Gottlieb’s producer.
