A suspected carjacker shot Friday by police remains in Wesley Medical Center under guard and has not been booked into jail yet, Wichita police said Saturday around noon.

The man, 30, sustained a gunshot wound to his right arm above his wrist and two "superficial wounds" to his abdomen on his right side, Sgt. Bruce Watts said. He is expected to recover and was talking to officers after Friday's shooting, according to Watts.

The man was shot multiple times by officers shortly before 3 p.m. Friday following a chase, car crash and confrontation with officers where police said he aimed a handgun at officers on at least two occasions and fired shots on another. Officers ordered him to the ground in the 7200 block of E. Zimmerly minutes after police spotted him nearby driving a Saturn stolen at gunpoint from a 20-year-old woman at Dillons, 9450 E. Harry.

Capt. Hassan Ramzah said Friday the man pointed his gun at an officer before police fired and hit him at least twice.

Police think the man used the neighborhood near Lincoln and Governeour, located on the fringe of Cottonwood Park, as a dumping ground for vehicles he stole. Watts said the man is suspected in an armed carjacking Thursday at Towne East Square and a subsequent armed robbery at Las Tarascas Bakery, 5701 E. Lincoln, and may be involved in other recent, similar crimes in the area.

It's unknown whether the man lives in Wichita, Watts said, adding that he may have a criminal record in other states.
