CrossFirst Bank to begin construction on Wichita building in June

CrossFirst Bank, the Leawood-based bank co-founded by former Bank IV and Intrust executive Ron Baldwin, announced plans Wednesday for its first Wichita building – one that’s much larger than a typical branch bank.

Officials of the $580 million-asset bank said Wednesday that the Wichita facility, to be built near the southwest corner of 13th Street and Webb Road, will be two stories with a basement and between 7,000 and 8,000 square feet on both the first and second floors. It will have the capacity to provide office space for a staff of up to 25, said CrossFirst’s Wichita president, Steve Peterson.

“We’re building a headquarters,” Peterson said. “I think that’s more fitting of what we’re building versus a branch.”

Construction is expected to begin in June, and it is expected to open in 2014. Crossland Construction is the general contractor and GLMV Architecture is the architect.

Officials did not disclose the cost of the new building.

CrossFirst, which entered Wichita after the summer 2011 hiring of Peterson, has been operating out of leased space in Country Club Park, a nearby office building. Country Club Park developers Bob Geist, Tom Devlin and Craig Barton are also investors in CrossFirst.

It currently has seven Wichita employees. Peterson said that number will increase because of the new building, largely on the retail banking side. Besides teller operations inside, the new building will have two drive-up teller lanes on the southwest end as well as an ATM.

Once the new building is occupied, CrossFirst will likely expand its commercial banking staff. Peterson said he did not have the exact number of new staff members CrossFirst will hire.

He said the new building will help establish in customers’ minds the idea that the bank is here permanently. That’s something that Peterson thinks is not clear with the bank running an office out of leased space.

In addition to Wichita and Leawood, the bank operates an office in Oklahoma City. It was founded in 2007, and 100 of its more than 500 investors live in Wichita.
