— Kansas junior Jake Heaps entered spring practice the No. 1 quarterback on the Jayhawks’ depth chart. But after five spring practices, KU coach Charlie Weis has added stronger signals that Heaps, a transfer from BYU, will be the KU starter when the Jayhawks open practice in the fall.

“He’s the man to beat out,” Weis said on Tuesday. “I put him first for a reason.”

Heaps is currently ahead of sophomore Michael Cummings, who completed 45.7 percent of his passes for 435 yards last season after replacing ineffective starter Dayne Crist.

Heaps passed for 2,316 yards with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions as a freshman starter at BYU in 2010. He left BYU following his sophomore season and transferred to Kansas in early 2012.

“He just needs to get out there,” Weis said of Heaps. “I know last year, everyone was always talking about Dayne, and how it didn’t turn out according to plan.

“What we don’t want to do is put any unnecessary pressure on him as ‘the savior,’ but at the same time, the expectation I put on Jake won’t exceed the expectations he puts on himself.”

The Jayhawks returned to spring practice on Tuesday after a week off for spring break. They’ll practice eight more times before their spring game on April 13.

KU announced Tuesday that it was partnering with EON Reality, an interactive 3D software provider, in the creation of software that would be used in a virtual reality football simulator. Kansas, which is the first NCAA school to use EON, plans to use the simulator for training.
