Papa John’s restaurants in the Wichita metropolitan area are donating a portion of the proceeds from Tuesday and Wednesday to help defray expenses for the Sedgwick County sheriff’s deputy who was wounded in the line of duty earlier this month.

Deputy Lucas Powell was hit with a shotgun blast on March 11 in Butler County following a three-county police pursuit that ended with a shootout near Potwin.

He is home recovering from his injuries, the most serious being to his eye. Powell’s medical bills are being paid by the county, Lt. Dave Mattingly said. It is not yet known whether Powell, 33, will regain sight in his eye.

The 10 Papa John’s restaurants in Wichita, Derby and Andover are donating 10 percent of the proceeds from Tuesday and Wednesday to the deputy’s family, said Doug Knapp, marketing manager for the Wichita-area stores.

Clara Catherine Crosser, 26, and Jason Perez, 35, face three counts of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, making a criminal threat, possession of methamphetamine, two counts of burglary, fleeing from law enforcement and criminal damage to property.

Perez also faces three counts of criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and one count of possession of marijuana after he was convicted of similar drug charge in August in Johnson County District Court.

Crosser and Perez are each being held in lieu of a $1 million bond. They are scheduled to return to court Thursday for preliminary hearings.
