For April Fools’ Day or a birthday, gross out the gang and giggle a lot at this fabulously yucky bash.

Enjoy some foul play

For an icky version of pin the tail on the donkey, cut a bread slice shape from foam core, add grain speckles and a crust with brown paint, and glue on a cockroach cutout. Each player gets a pushpin and a wad of “mold” (dryer lint). One at a time, blindfolded players try to stick their mold onto the cockroach. Whoever’s closest to the roach wins.

Dig a compost cake

Do like the worms do, and dine on a decomposing pile of garbage. Make an 8-inch-square chocolate cake from your favorite mix or recipe. Cover it with chocolate frosting, then press pretzel rods around the sides, leaving some cracks for protruding critters. Sprinkle the top with crushed chocolate cookies, then decorate with candy fruit slices, Circus Peanuts and gummy worms and bugs.

Munch on monsters

For an unsettling snack, let the crew make freaky-face pizzas. Lightly toast English-muffin halves, spread them with pizza sauce and sprinkle on cheese. Have each child make a face from such toppings as pepperoni, olives, carrot curls and other veggie pieces. Broil briefly to heat the pizza and melt the cheese. Parmesan “dandruff” makes a deliciously vile finishing touch.

Mix a pestilent potion

Ask guests to bring along a contribution to a nasty, inedible brew: anything from ketchup to banana peels to an old shoe. Supply a tub, long wooden spoons, water and food coloring. Let the kids take turns adding ingredients and stirring. For fizz, toss in a bit of baking soda and vinegar. When you’re done, dump the potion carefully.

Make time for slime

To create grody green goop (a project for kids ages 4 and up), mix together 3/4 cup of warm water, 1 cup of white glue, and a few drops of green food coloring. In another bowl, combine 4 teaspoons of borax and 1 1/3 cups of warm water. Pour the contents of the first bowl into the second and let it sit for 1 minute without stirring. Your congealed slime is good to goo. Afterward, pack it in zip-top bags for take-home fun.

Party favor

End your party on a repellent note by sending guests off with a dirty old sock (really a clean one, dusted with cocoa powder) filled with gruesome goodies.
