Applications are now being accepted by the Kansas Insurance Department for five $1,000 scholarships that will be awarded to African-American students enrolled next fall in Kansas universities or colleges.
The scholarships are part of the African American Monumental Life Settlement, a national legal settlement with the Monumental Life Insurance Company. An investigation found the company charged African Americans higher premiums because of their race. The Kansas Legislature passed a law stating the Kansas portion of the settlement should go to a scholarship for Kansas African-American college students.
The deadline to apply is May 1. A scholarship committee will award the scholarships, which are renewable.
For more information, students can contact the office of minority affairs or student financial aid at their college or university or go to the Kansas Insurance Department’s website at www.ksinsurance.org/gpa/scholarship.htm, or the department’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/kansasinsurancedepartment.
