He may have thought she was an easy mark because she is in a wheelchair, but it is the would-be robber who is now in a Wichita hospital.

The suspect approached the 28-year-old woman in the 600 block of North Topeka on Monday night, hit her in the knee with a set of brass knuckles and demanded all of her property, including her purse, Lt. Doug Nolte said. The woman’s boyfriend was nearby, however, and tackled the suspect.

He then held the man down while police were called. Before the officers arrived, Nolte said, the suspect swallowed something that police think was illegal drugs.

Officers arrested him and then took him to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis for evaluation. Doctors decided to admit the 45-year-old man for observation.

He’ll be booked into the Sedgwick County Jail upon his release, Nolte said.

The victim was not seriously injured, he said. Her 33-year-old boyfriend was “very instrumental” in preventing the robbery from being completed, Nolte said.
