Newman falls in NCAA Division II postseason

Newman’s first NCAA Division II basketball appearance ended with a rocky second half, as Midwestern State beat the Jets 81-60 on Saturday night in Denver.

Newman pulled within 39-38 early in the second half on a layup by Shamar Acuay, but Midwestern State used a 16-3 run to give itself some breathing room. A 10-0 burst a short while later knocked out the Jets.

Acuay finished with 17 points to lead the Jets, and Bobby Wesley had eight. Midwestern State shot 49 percent (25-51), Newman committed 21 turnovers and was outrebounded 44-24.

Newman finishes the season 20-8, its most wins as a Division II program.

Emporia State women win — Hutchinson native Laura Patrick led Emporia State with 18 points and nine rebounds as the Hornets continued their run at the NCAA Tournament with a 69-67 win over Minnesota State on Saturday in the second round in Topeka.

Emporia State, the 2010 NCAA Division II champion, took the lead on a jumper by Rheanna Egli with 3:12 left and never trailed again. Cheney native Merissa Quick made 1 of 2 free throws for the 69-67 lead with 20 seconds left and Minnesota State missed two shots on its final possession.

Patrick hit four three-pointers in the win. Egli and Rachel Hanf added 13 points each for the Hornets. Jocelyn Cummings scored 10 points for Emporia State. Quick chipped in with 8 points and 6 rebounds.

Eighth-seeded Emporia State (22-8) plays No. 6 seed Augustana (26-6) on Monday at 7 p.m. Augustana defeated No. 7 seed Southwestern Oklahoma 68-64.

The winner of Monday’s game advances to the quarterfinals beginning March 26 in San Antonio.
