He was sitting in his car on a south Wichita street early on Friday morning when a stranger approached and demanded his money, police said.

If the victim didn’t cooperate, Lt. Joe Schroeder said, the suspect claimed he would shoot him. But the victim decided he wasn’t going to surrender without a fight, so he got out of his car in the 2400 block of South Glendale at about 4:30 a.m. and confronted the suspect.

The 38-year-old victim was knocked down in the ensuing scuffle and punched in the face several times, Lt. Joe Schroeder said.

His cellphone and car keys were taken, but the victim found his keys a short distance away. The suspect ran north from the scene.

Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, he said. The victim does not live in that neighborhood, which is just northeast of Pawnee and Oliver.
