A man suspected of impersonating a law enforcement officer in dozens of Kansas towns on Wednesday targeted a Colorado business 18 miles from the state border, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said.
Robert Helms, 45, showed up at the Walsh, Colo., grocery store, again portraying a sheriff’s deputy from Adams County, Kan., which doesn’t exist, the KBI said in a news release. As in other cases, Helms on Wednesday flashed a fake badge and credentials.
Helms is accused of canvassing Kansas and cashing or writing bogus checks at convenience and other stores in a string of impersonations that stretch back to Jan. 6, according to a timeline released in February by the KBI. Authorities think he may target businesses in southwestern Kansas and southeastern Colorado over the next few days.
Helms is described as a white man, 5-feet-7, weighing 190 pounds, with blue eyes and short gray hair. He wears round glasses at times, may look older than his age and has been known to drive a maroon or dark-colored Dodge or Chrysler minivan, the KBI has said.
