Wichita companies and individuals averaged 122 patents per year over the last five years, according to a new Brookings Institute report.
That places Wichita area 104th in annual average number of patents and 153rd in patents per work-force member, among 358 cities ranked by Brookings.
In 2011, the top local filers of patents were Wichita installations for LSI, which was sold to NetApp last year; Agco, the farm equipment marker in Hesston; Boeing Corp., which will leave Wichita next year; and Spirit AeroSystems.
According to the report, the number of patents filed in Wichita has risen roughly 50 percent since 1980 while the number filed nationally has risen about 500 percent.
Two California cities, San Jose and San Francisco, ranked first and second.
