— With all five starters gone from their NJCAA runner-up finish a year ago, the Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team knew there would be a lot of doubts.

Could they make it through the regular season undefeated, again?

Would they win another Region VI title?

Other than just one loss in the regular season, the Blue Dragons answered the most important question on Saturday at Hartman Arena, beating Cowley 70-46 in the Region VI championship game.

The win puts Hutchinson (33-1) in its third national tournament in four years.

"Winning like we did is just awesome," Hutchinson guard Jade Herl said. "We lost all five starters from last year. There were a lot of doubters. That has motivated us a lot this year."

Herl, who had three points and four assists against Cowley, was one of four Blue Dragons to make the all-tournament team. Hutchinson’s Chrisstasia Walter, who had nine points and 11 assists against Cowley, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Jamie Patrick and Jasmine Patterson were the other two all-tournament players for the Blue Dragons.

"This group has really overachieved," Hutchinson coach John Ontjes said. "They got their goals set and never wavered on what they wanted to do."

Holding a 37-36 lead in the early part of the second half, Hutchinson started to break away from a pesky Cowley team that never had a lead. The Blue Dragons used their defense to help them pull away and by the 10:15 mark, a Kyrsten Crawford three-pointer gave Hutchinson its first double-digit lead at 49-39.

Patterson led Hutchinson with 19 points while teammate Aja Sorrells added 11. Kassy Ptacek paced led the Tigers with 15 points.
