An 18-year-old Goddard man suffered head and neck injuries after his speeding car veered off K-42, overturned and burst into flames Saturday afternoon, according to the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.

Witnesses told authorities the teen was “travelling at an extremely high rate of speed” before crashing into a ditch and some trees around 2:50 p.m., Sgt. Gary Hargus said.

First responders arrived to find the teen outside of the 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix near 87th Street South shortly before the car caught fire, he said.

The driver — the sole occupant of the Pontiac — was taken to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis in critical condition. No one else was injured.

Hargus said there is no immediate evidence drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
