Police say there were two possibly related gang incidents in Wichita on Friday night, with one incident resulting in a beaten teen.
“I’m sure it’s probably just a couple of sets in conflict right now,” Sgt. Bruce Watts said in a police briefing Saturday. “I don’t think it’s increased more than what it has been. I don’t know what started it.… We’ve just been fortunate so far that nobody has turned up shot.”
The first incident was around midnight when a group of 16 to 18-year-old males were seen fighting at McAdams Park in the 1300 block of East 13th Street , Watts said.
There were reports of shots fired, but no reports of anyone with gun-related injuries taken to the hospital.
Around 1:15 a.m. there was another report of fighting among teenage males in the 1400 block of N. Bluff. A 17-year-old was severely beaten and admitted in critical condition to Wesley Medical Center. There are four or five outstanding suspects.
Watts said that yesterday police heard of some threats of gang activity at Southeast High School.
“We beefed up officer presence in the area and extra patrols, but nothing developed,” he said.
