Hutchinson, Cowley advance to Region VI women’s final

— The amazing thing, really, is that Hutchinson’s Jade Herl had no idea what the score was.

Leading Butler 60-59 in Friday’s Region VI women’s basketball semifinal and with the final seconds ticking off the clock, Herl found herself defending Butler guard Shayla Williams one-on-one in the open court.

"I thought we were up three, so I came out to guard her to make sure she didn’t tie the score," said Herl, who was then informed of the score. "I almost just let her go by (for the layup) when she drove ... we were up by one ... wow."

Herl came out to guard Williams at the three-point line, then went with her to the baseline, forcing her to take an off-balance shot that missed as the buzzer sounded and No. 3 Hutchinson held on for the 60-59 victory and a spot in Saturday’s VI final against Cowley.

"I just went with her, got straight up and she came into me with the contact," said Herl, who scored 12 points, all on three-pointers. "I really thought she was going to pull up for the three to try and tie it."

The Grizzlies played without All-Jayhawk West guard Jamillah Bonner for the last 10 minutes after Bonner suffered a right ankle injury.

"That’s a tough loss right there, you’re talking about our school’s all-time leading scorer, our team’s leader," Butler coach Mike Helmer said. "But you cannot take anything away from Hutchinson. What (Hutchinson coach) John Ontjes does is amazing. I just wanted to see a situation where I felt the players make the play. But Hutch won the game. All credit goes to them.

"On that last play, maybe I wish (Williams) would’ve pulled up for the shot because she’s such a good shooter, but she did exactly as we’ve coached her. If somebody comes out on you in the open court, you drive."

Butler rallied from a 58-50 deficit with just under three minutes left to make it 58-56 with 55 seconds left on back-to-back three-pointers from Carly Bettencourt and Ashlee Ivy. Butler had a chance to tie with 20 seconds left, but Bettencourt missed the front end of a one-and-one trailing 59-57.

The Grizzlies led 25-24 at halftime. Samantha Satterlee led the Grizzlies with 13 points. Williams and Bettencourt added 12 points each.

Chrisstasia Walter led Hutchinson with 16 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.

"We almost destructed," Ontjes said. "We really relaxed ... we lost our focus at the end of the game. Both ends of the floor, both offensively and defensively. "
