Friends women lose in first round of NAIA tourney

Friends’s women lost to Roosevelt, Ill., 57-52 on Wednesday in the NAIA opening round of the women’s tournament in in Sioux City, Iowa.

Tina Fakahafua scored 15 points in a losing cause for the Falcons.

Friends managed just 15 of 58 from the field (23 percent) and was 3 of 20 from three-point range.

Friends did control the boards, outrebounding Roosevelt 57-39. Inekka Stevenson grabbed 14 rebounds and Sarah Munds had 10.

Friends pulled within 53-51 with 2:09 remaining, but Roosevelt hit four free throws down the stretch.

Friends finishes 23-9.

William Penn 71, McPherson men 65 — Adam Bruner scored 21 points in a losing cause for McPherson, which led at halftime 30-25 against the No. 1 seed in first-round play at the NAIA Tournament in Point Lookout, Mo. Samson Shivers scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds for McPherson.

William Penn’s Brandon Beasley scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, helping his team improve to 31-1.

McPherson (15-18): Johnson 10, Powers 8, Lakin 6, Shivers 13, Reinhardt 4, Bruner 21, Miller 3. Totals 21-65 (7-21) 16-20 65.
