Alert residents played a key role in the arrest of a suspect following the armed robbery of a Family Dollar store in southeast Wichita on Sunday night, police said.
Citizens called 911 to report that a man appeared to be robbing the store at Lincoln and Woodlawn at about 8 p.m., Lt. Joe Schroeder said. He was armed with a handgun.
A police officer entered the front of the store, and the suspect ran out the back door.
Other officers arrived and set up a perimeter of the surrounding area, Schroeder said. A K-9 unit was brought in and the dog eventually found the man hiding in the common basement of a fourplex in the 800 block of South San Pablo, a few blocks away.
The 21-year-old man was booked into jail. Over the course of the investigation, Schroeder said, a number of accomplices were identified. Investigators are now looking to see if the suspect and his accomplices are linked to other recent robberies of Family Dollar and Dollar General stores.
