After stretching its winning streak to four with a 5-1 victory over New Orleans, Wichita State lost to a red-hot Central Arkansas 6-3 on Saturday in Conway, Ark.

Leading 2-1 going into the top of the ninth, WSU struck for three runs to break open its victory over New Oleans (0-11). Mikel Mucha opened with a single, stole second and scored on Dayne Parker’s single. Garrett Bayliff tripled in Parker for the second run. Bayliff scored on a wild pitch to round ou the scoring.

Tobin Mateychick, roughed by Pittsburgh in his earlier start, rebounded to go 5 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and one run.

Central Arkansas (10-1) struck for a run in the first then scored three runs in a weird third. WSU starter Cale Elam (0-1) hit leadoff batter Justin Treece with a pitch. Nick Rougeau laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached when Elam threw wildly to first. Forrestt Allday, who hit all day (4 for 5), singled in Treece. After Allday stole second, Blake Marchal walked to load the bases. Elam struck out Jonathan Davis and Michael Marietta.

However, Elam walked Ethan Harris, forcing in Rougeau. Then, Elam hit Garrett Brown, forcing in Allday.

WSU scored twice in the eighth after two were out, Erik Harbutz singled and Micah Green doubled to put runners on second and third. Dayne Parker singled in Harbutz and Tyler Baker hit a pinch-hit single, scoring Green.

Baker, going 4 for 5 for the day, is 9 for last 17 (.529) in his last six games.

Shocker pitchers have amassed some good numbers in the last six games. The staff has a 2.37 ERA with 50 strikeouts and just 15 walks.

Offensively, the glaring weakness is the leadoff position. Leadoff hitters in the past four games are 0 for 16. Going back to the ORU game, leadoff hitters are 1 for 20.
