Actors Julie Bowen, Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson came to Kansas City on Friday for a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City.
They left with enough material for an episode of “Modern Family.”
The three stars of the ABC comedy were trapped in an elevator for about an hour Friday night at the Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center, where they were headliners for the Kids Night Out 2013 fundraiser.
They were among 15 people stuck in an elevator on the third floor of the hotel. Rescue workers from the Kansas City Fire Department had to work their way down from the 40th floor to reach and free the trapped people, some of whom tweeted photos from their cramped situation.
The actors were to appear on stage about 9 p.m. They were freed about 10 p.m., and when they got on stage they seemed pumped up and full of adrenaline. Among their jokes, some of them laced with profanities, was that Bowen had to go to the bathroom in the elevator. She denied it, saying she was working on her bladder control.
The actors also praised and thanked the Fire Department.
Cast mate Ty Burrell was supposed to appear at the fundraiser but had to cancel because of a conflict and missed the excitement.
The stars’ appearance helped set a record attendance for the Boys & Girls Club with about 1,500 people.
Many thought it was a joke when the emcee announced there would be a delay in the program because the stars were stuck in an elevator.
About 15 minutes later they knew it wasn’t a joke. The band played and many in the well-dressed crowd went to the bar. People were tweeting and taking pictures of the Fire Department. About a third of the crowd left before the actors got on stage.
Stonestreet grew up in Kansas City, Kan. His character, Cameron Tucker, is from Tonganoxie, Mo. He has said he wanted the show to make fun of Missouri instead of Kansas.
People at the fundraiser were wondering if the elevator incident would provide fodder for a future episode.
As Stonestreet left the stage, he said: “Have a great night and don’t use the elevators!”
