Bishop Michael Jackels will celebrate a Mass for Pope Benedict XVI on Friday, the Catholic Diocese of Wichita said in a news release.
The Mass, which is open to the public, will be at 5:30 p.m. in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 E. Central. The Mass will be said in thanksgiving for the ministry of Pope Benedict and to ask the Lord to bless his retirement, the diocese said. Benedict, 85, announced earlier this month that he would retire, the first pope to do so in nearly 600 years.
Friday’s Mass also will ask the Holy Spirit to guide the College of Cardinals in its choice of Benedict’s successor. About 115 cardinals are expected to meet next month in Rome to choose the next pope.
