The Allen American finally found a way to beat the Thunder, topping Wichita 2-1 on Frinday night Texas.
The Americans had lost three straight to the Thunder, including two games in the past week. On Friday, Allen’s defense held Wichita to 23 shots on goal, and Steve Silverthorn stopped 22 of them.
Allen took a 1-0 lead in the second period on a goal by Jamie Schaafsma. The Thunder tied the score on Niel Trimm’s goal at 8:52 of the third period, but the Americans reclaimed the lead 38 seconds later when Jarrett Lukin scored.
The Thunder was 0 for 7 on the power play, including a span of four Allen penalties during a 10-minute span in the second period.
The Americans needed a win to remain atop the Central Hockey League standings — the Thunder began the night just one point behind.
