Black Hills Energy is asking Kansans to make sure their gas meters are free of snow and ice.
The gas company said residents should use a broom to gently remove any snow and ice from meters. Do not use a shovel, ice pick or other tool that might damage the meter.
Because natural gas is injected with a rotten egg odor, it can be smelled if there is a leak. Vance Crocker, the general manager of Black Hills Energy’s Kansas gas utility, said people who detect a leak indoors should immediately evacuate the building and call 911 or the Black Hills Energy emergency number: 800-694-8989.
