Wichita State won its first baseball game of the season Tuesday, beating Oral Roberts 5-4 in Tulsa.
Casey Gillaspie doubled in the tying run and scored what proved to be the winning run in the eighth for the Shockers (1-3).
Trailing 4-3 entering the eighth, Tanner Dearman walked and scored on Gillaspie’s double to right. Johnny Coy’s groundout to second sent Gillaspie to third. Garrett Bayliff’s infield groundout scored Gillaspie.
WSU had taken a 3-2 head in the sixth. Gillaspie tripled with one out. Coy struck out but reached on a wild pitch. After Garrett Bayliff struck out, Erik Harbutz delievered a two-run single that gave the Shockers their first lead of the season.
ORU tied it 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth. Jose Trevino reached on an error by shortstop Cody Bobbit and scored when former Shocker Nate Goro singled. ORU tacked on another unearned run in the seventh to go ahead 4-3.
Albert Minnis picked up the win in relief, going two innings, allowing four hits and two runs, both unearned. Brandon Peterson picked up the save, striking out Matt Brandy with the tying run at third and the winning run at second.
WSU will play host to Delaware on Friday, opening a four-game series.
