Correction: An earlier version of the story had an incorrect age for the guardian

A 5-year-old boy was placed in protective custody after he came to school in Derby on Tuesday and complained of his bottom hurting after a spanking, authorities said.

“The child had visible injuries” consistent with being struck several times with a stick, said Lt. Jeff Weible of the Exploited and Missing Child Unit.

The boy, who lives in Wichita, was taken to Wesley Medical Center for treatment and then placed in protective custody, Weible said. The child’s 28-year-old guardian was arrested following questioning at EMCU offices.
