Police are seeking witnesses to a two-car crash that injured three people Tuesday night, including one seriously.

The collision occurred shortly before 7 p.m. in the 1100 block of North Oliver , Lt. Joe Schroeder. A 19-year-old man driving north on Oliver in the curb lane swerved to avoid a pedestrian who had stepped out into the street in the middle of the block, a witness told investigators.

The man’s car crossed into the southbound lanes, where it struck a car being driven by a 23-year-old woman head-on the driver’s side. The man was taken to Wesley Medical Center with a closed-head injury and had not regained consciousness as of Wednesday morning, Schroeder said. A 3-year-old boy in the back seat of his car was treated and released from the hospital.

The woman driving the other car was treated and released from Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis, Schroeder said.

Oliver was closed for several hours in the aftermath of the collision. The pedestrian left the scene before officers could talk to him, Schroeder said.

“I don’t think it was something that was intentional” to cause the crash, Schroeder said of the pedestrian stepping into the street. Police received unconfirmed reports that the pedestrian may have been attempting to retrieve a dog that was loose, “but nobody saw it,” he said.

Anyone who witnessed the collision and hasn’t talked to police is encouraged to call the accident follow-up unit at 316-268-4131, he said.
