— Kansas football coach Charlie Weis made two staff changes Monday, naming defensive coordinator Dave Campo as KU’s assistant head coach for defense and promoting assistant Scott Vestal to the role of assistant defensive backs coach.

Campo will continue to coach KU’s defensive backs, while Vestal, previously the assistant director of operations, will fill a hole created after assistant Clint Bowen moved from defensive backs to linebackers coach.

Bowen filled a vacancy left after linebackers coach DeMontie Cross left to join Gary Patterson’s staff at TCU. Before coming to KU last season, Vestal was the quality control coach for defense at Florida in 2011 and held the same role at Texas in 2010.

Weis also announced some minor changes to the staff. Former KU assistant Louis Matsakis will return to KU as the Jayhawks’ director of personnel. Before spending four seasons as an assistant at Youngstown State, Matsakis spent five of the previous six seasons on KU’s staff. He is the younger brother of George Matsakis, who works in an administrative role in KU's athletic department.

Maxwell Onyegbule, a former defensive lineman at KU, will return as a defensive graduate assistant, while Ty Greenwood, a former assistant coach at Pierce College in Los Angeles, will serve as KU’s quality control coach for the defense.

Former defensive graduate assistant Rod Jones will now serve as the director of high school relations, while former graduate assistant Maurice Crum Jr. will take Vestal’s assistant director of operations position.
