The Sedgwick County Commission on Wednesday is expected to approve a contract with Derby to provide administrative and technical support to combat youth alcohol and drug abuse.

The contract will support Derby “in their efforts to make drug and alcohol abuse assessment, treatment and treatment services available to the students of Derby and their families,” according to a county staff report.

County Manager William Buchanan said the new $4,500 contract with Derby will essentially mirror an agreement the county already has to provide similar administrative services to the city of Wichita.

Funding for the Derby contract will come from the city’s share of liquor tax funds.

Local government’s share of alcohol tax revenue is split one third for the municipality’s general fund, one third for parks and recreation and one third for addiction prevention and treatment, Buchanan said.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, county staff will present the year-end report on operations and income from the county-owned and privately managed Intrust Bank Arena.

On Tuesday, the county will hold its annual “retreat” meeting, focusing on long-term financial planning.

Programs scheduled for discussion include: the Heartland Preparedness Center, stormwater management, handling of mentally ill jail inmates, the zoo and the Child Advocacy Center.

Wednesday’s meeting will be at 9 a.m. on the third floor of the Sedgwick County Courthouse, 525 N. Main, in Wichita.

Tuesday’s retreat meeting is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at the Ark Valley Lodge, 615 N. Main, in Wichita.
